Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL), incorporated in 1989, was established to develop extra-high voltage alternating current and high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission lines. The company plans, implements, operates, and maintains the Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS), managing electric power transmission across India. Its business segments include inter-state transmission, telecom services under the brand POWERTEL, and consultancy services. Operating primarily in the electric power transmission, telecommunications, and consultancy industries within India, PGCIL owns and manages about 84% of the country's inter-regional transmission capacity. It undertakes strategically important projects assigned by the Government of India on a nomination basis. As a Maharatna Central Public Sector Undertaking (CPSU), the company is under the administrative control of the Ministry of Power, Government of India, which held a 51.34% stake as of March 31, 2021.
